And in a way, I think that's how we ought to feel; ashamed, ashamed that humans can treat other humans that way, that adults can treat children that way. Ashamed that no-one noticed, and went to the rescue of these children, like so many others. So why did I read on? Why did I finish it in one day? The story was compelling, a story of survival. At the end of it all, Alloma Gilbert has walked away, changed and traumatised by her horrific childhood, but determined to be a good mother and to make something of herself. That sort of strength is to be admired. And in a way I think we need to know about this unspeakable evil that exists in our society, for how else to recognise something we would only deem possible in our deepest, darkest nightmares? | You will be shocked by this book | Customer Rating: | | I agree entirely with all the other reviewers. Eunice Spry was a Jehovah's Witness (a religion which is obsessed by Satan the Devil - they believe that ANYONE who is not a Jehovah's Witness is under Satan's influence and that we are all going to die a terrible death at Armageddon and that only they will be saved). This evil woman continually told her foster children they were from the devil when in fact it was she herself who was almost the devil reincarnate. | Heartbreaking | Customer Rating: | | ok..im the kinda person who can read pretty much anything and it not affect me i read Dave Pelzers story shocked but not haunted by it , ive read quite a few of these kind of books with shock but they had little affect i thought the were extemerly good reads. I herd about Eunice Spry on the news when she was convicted, then herd many things about Child C first but i couldnt find it at my local libary so i got out this book knowing that it had somthing to do with Child C . I started to read it and found shocking and disturbing i got half way through when Eunice forced Alloma to eat porridge with rat droppings and more horffically when Eunice locked Alloma's 'brother' and 'sister' in a room for a month forced the young boy to drink his urine and the girl to eat her excrement, i found that i just couldnt go on i started dreaming of having poles shoved down my throat and being tortured in the same way i feel so much for Alloma Gilbert and her fellow siblings being abused , i took this book back to the libary half read wishing i had the nereve and heart to carry on. This book is not for the faint hearted it truley is the most upseting thing i am yet to read. Alloma shows that if she can surive what Eunice did to her i can survie anything ! | A GOOD BOOK | Customer Rating: | As i read it i also though what i was doing at the time and cant believe it was going on during my own childhood. Some bits very graphic and an emotionaly read but read it in only a few nights because i just had to know what happens next. Recommed all to buy but bare in mind it can be upsetting. |
