Summaries and Customer Reviews are supplied by Amazon.com An excellent resource for the lay-person | Customer Rating: | | This comprehensive text on environmental science and technology is an excellent resource for the layperson and the academic alike. It covers a vast range of environmental issues which are particularly relevant today as we move towards a greater sensitivity and awareness of environmental issues. Andrew Porteous is to be congratulated on his capacity for a scholarly approach to the subject whilst talking in language that is accessible to the ordinary man and woman who is concerned with these issues. | Pity about the fakery | Customer Rating: | It is offputting to a potential buyer that the excerpt ends with the famous Chief Seattle speech without mentioning that the speech is a fake - the first appearence of "The Earth does not belong to man; man belongs to the earth...all things are connected etc." is in 1992 book by Al Gore. If he gets this wrong how reliable is the rest of the book?
(For a quick history of the fake speech see http://www.textbookleague.org/95faker.htm ) | My most dogeared book to date! | Customer Rating: | As first year students on a BSc Environmental course, this book proved invaluable accross all of our course modules. Not only does the text provide a clear explanation of the subject, it also has plenty of material to reference into your own work. Now in the second year this is still one of my most used books. It is a must for anybody looking at the science of the environment. | Essential Ref for Environment & Engineering Professionals | Customer Rating: | | This book is a recommended text for several level 2 and 3 courses run by Open University and has been a fountain of knowledge for essays, major assignments and subsequent professional reports. I own the second edition of this book, the third edition promises to be crammed with up-to-the minute references, text and diagrams. Environmental students and professionals from all sectors, civil engineers, planners and site facilities managers with a vested interest in environmental management should own this essential text. Also has a good section on ISO14001. | A clear concise dictionary for any student | Customer Rating: | | This book has probably been the most useful reference book I have ever owned. The definitions given have all been clear and precise and have assisted me greatly in my understanding of the subject. Many of the definitions also indicate that further information is available elswhere in the book. At times reading this book is a bit like surfing the WEB, you start on one subject and then get gently lead along a path and end up at a different (although connected) subject. Although I have been using this book to assist with course work I believe that it would be of great use to anyone interested in technolgy and science. Its a great book to have around when reading one of the science magazines. I strongly recommend it. |
