Summaries and Customer Reviews are supplied by Amazon.com A great insight into a great band... | Customer Rating: | I found this to be a fascinating insight into the rise, fall and resurrection of one of the UKs most musically underrated bands. The book contained some great quotes and anecdotes both from band members and those around them which served up a fascinating story of struggle, achievement and the various pitfalls of life on the road. The only downside to the book is the authors cringeworthy narration at times (especially when describing Nick Rhodes), but that criticism aside this makes for an entertaining, enlightening and thoroughly enjoyable read for fans and non-fans alike. | a good read patchy on any new information | Customer Rating: | This book is not quite a cut and paste of tired old quotes but feels very close to that, it is written in a easy style and the chapters fly by. The probelm is that is very short on anything that you wont have already read on a on-line biog or heard about in tabloid gossip colums. Quite enjoyable but the "unauthorised" tag doesnt really mean anything. It will be interesting to see if any of the official books coming out later this year will be more fact filled or have any un-written about stories in them | The best of times and the worst of times | Customer Rating: | Now, I'm a fan of the band - first gig I saw etc etc - but I'm not really followed the story at all. I guess I must have been waiting for something like this - and what a long time it has been in coming. First thing to say is that this is warts and all. Duran have made some glorious mistakes and put some absolute rubbish out over the years, and this book does not flinch from discussing this. They have also made some tremendous music over the years, and of course this is reflected too. It's nicely balanced.
It also seems to be reasonable detailed without being too overwhelming. Maybe a more knowledgable fan would be able to point out the mistakes and the ommissions, but I learnt a lot about where the band came from, where they went too and where they are now. It is true to say that some of Simon's lyrics make a little more sense when put into the context of the band's history.
The writing style is easy to read, although you have to laugh at some of the (many) two/three word descriptions that have been shoe horned in before mentions of particular band members. Everytime Nick gets mentioned it is 'foppish keyboard maestro' or 'bleached white duke' or one of any number of others. It's a bizarre writing quirk, and you do start to notice them after a while, but it doesn't really detract.
Bottom line is that Duran have been a hugely influential band over the years, and it is about time they had a book like this. If you are interested in music you will probably enjoy it, if you like Duran you definately will. | Entertaining stuff | Customer Rating: | | This is a very enjoyable read. Malins is particularly insightful about the early years and he offers plenty of interesting opinions about Duran Duran's music. A must for fans, though I think more casual observers will also be drawn in by the first half a dozen chapters. as the band form and have the biggest successes of their career. | Great book on Duran Duran | Customer Rating: | | Hopefully this will review will appear as I've tried a couple of times now. Anyway, I just wanted to say that this is a fascinating read about a much-maligned band. What's slightly odd is that the author Malins has written for Q magazine for several years, a magazine that seems to hate Duran Duran. They've even voted Thank You as the Worse All Of All-Time in their current issue. God knows what conversations he had with other journalists there! Anyway, this is a great read and has turned me on to some albums I'd previously ignored - in particular Arcadia and Medazzaland. |
