You probably shouldn't....

Do not read this.... unless you want to leave your armchair and get out onto the hills. I loved it - and wanted to start fell-running. Well-written, hard to put down, informative, challenging, and I've re-read it & will continue to o so

Less about running, more about people

Well what more can be said about a book that has been so widely reviewed? Perhaps that the real gold of this work lies in the interviews with and descriptions of people other than the author, that in turn enable him to not only describe the world of fell running but also tell the story of such things as the changing face of the British countryside.
I am easily bored by and sneer readily at books about personal achievement and adventure but this is something very special and unique and supremely well written, if a little over written in some places for my taste.

Gripping (like the soles of his shoes). Transcends sports writing to become simply a great read.

I happen to like running, and running in mountains. Consequently I was hooked from the start. However it's so much more - and so much better - than simply a sports' book (and a book about a pretty obscure sport at that). I've bought four copies for people, not just as gifts but simply to spread the word. The clue is in the title: "A tale of... obsession": it really does get under your skin. It just makes me want to put on a pair of poorly-cushioned, knobbly-soled running shoes and head off into the wet - for fun.

Awesome

I dare you, no double-dare you, to read this book and not want to get up on the fells. The tales of miserable weather, physical pain, and overriding obsession will strike a chord in anyone who gets outside and does something while "normal people" are enjoying central heating and takeaway food. I've read and re-read my copy so much the pages have gone yellow and are falling out. I can't recommend this book strongly enough.

A lighthearted, un-put-down-able look at the history of fell-running

This is a fantastic book for anyone needing motivation to get the trainers on and pound a few miles.

Askwith humorously mixes the sport's history with personal stories from British fell-running legends like Billy Bland and Iron Joss, but also involves the reader in his own trials to complete the infamously-hard Bob Graham round.

The Scenes from a Fell Running Year also demonstrate how accessible this little-appreciated sport still is.

Unlike most training manuals, which try, usually unsuccessfully in my case, to provide motivation to keep going, this book effortlessly brings on a warm love affair with my trainers. I've read it time and time again when I feel the motivation sapping...
