Don't hesitate for even a moment! This is a MUST SEE!!! An absolute revelation!!!! Though it can only be truly appreciated by highly intelligent, sexually tolerant men and women who are capable of enjoying a gripping and visually stunning period thriller with the highest production values, featuring a beautiful and outstanding young cast! (And while you're filling your shopping trolley, buy 'Tipping the Velvet' too - based on a novel by the same author - Sarah Waters Tipping the Velvet : The Complete BBC Series [2002] - so different from 'Fingersmith' but also truly excellent!)

I rented this dvd on the strength of the reviews given alone, and very glad I did. I thought it was an absolutely fantastic adaptation and having not read the book or known anything about the story found myself captivated from start to finish. So good I have now ordered my own copy!

This is a brilliantly acted, gripping, fantastic adaptation of the Sarah Waters novel. The story has unguessable twists that will keep you on the edge of your seat; and an onscreen chemistry between the two leads that is beautiful and incredibly sexy. It's because of the casting that this film works so well- they are both perfect in their respective roles; and the supporting actors, music, costumes and locations are all very well chosen which brings just the right atmosphere and tone to life. This is much more than a love story, but the love protrayed is what makes it such a gripping tale. It's believable and compelling, and I can't say any more as I don't want to give the plot away. Please watch this - it's a brilliantly clever story, with great twists and the sexiest lesbian love scenes I have ever seen! What more can anyone ask for?!

I nicked this dvd off a friend who couldn't remember what had made her order it! The first thing I did after watching it (again!) was to tell her it was brilliant and she must get around to seeing it. The twist(s) were fabulous and I love the way they've managed to keep the essence of the book going. You still get the story told from both protagonists point of view which helps to fill in the blanks and make you go 'ohhhhh... nice one.' The movie is filmed beautifully with a lovely accompanying score. You believe you are in England of old and that the characters exist etc etc... thats all you can ask for in a movie, much less an adaptation! One of the few successful ones out there.

Having received the DVD from Amazon rental, I noted it was a BBC production, and couldn't remember ordering it (although obviously I had).So I was a bit predudiced thinking it would have low productions values etc. But it was a relevation. Great story line, characters and acting with very convincing sets. I was entranced by this film-not many do that for me.Worth repeated viewings.
