Summaries and Customer Reviews are supplied by Amazon.com Pick a path, any path... | Customer Rating: | | With paganism one of the fastest growing religions in the world, the overwhelming number of available options can be somewhat confusing to the newcomer. So many differing schools of thought exist alongside one another, with few paths claiming to be the one true path - for those unable to find covens, self-teaching is the only real option. But how do you know what to choose? Well books like these are a good place to start. Pagan Paths provides an overview of the major strands, including Gardnerian, Alexandrian and Seax Wicca, Chaos Magic, Hedgewitchcraft and Druidry. Naturally an introductory text can't possibly hope to cover all of the bases in the kind of depth that should be afforded to each path, but this book is a good introduction. Explaining the basics while providing exercises for the would-be pagan, along with an extensive bibliography of books, magazines and useful websites, Pagan Paths is the kind of thing you can read if you're just starting out - or you could even give it to a curious relative who wants to know just what you're getting yourself into. | Excellent starting point | Customer Rating: | | This book was the first i had read on Paganism. I found it a very enjoyable and informative read. It gives you a good understanding of the different pagan paths, the festivals, and the main principles. It also gives you a useful list of recommended reading in the back. | A good starter | Customer Rating: | I am in the process of learning more about paganism and the different paths available.
This book is a really good read, and guide, for those in a similar position. It is also good as a reference to go over certain rituals/festivals/traditions, therefore once read it is not wasted on the shelf, left to gather dust.
It is a basic, fun, interesting and easy read. If anything, my only criticism would be that it isn't more detailed and longer although it certainly does what it says on the tin. | I FOUND MY PATH FROM THIS GREAT BOOK | Customer Rating: | If your new to paganism, and not sure what path to choose, then this is the book to start you on your way. It takes you through each chapter, eplaining the different paths you can take, some chapters are a bit short, but they do explain clearly and informativly the different paths.
The author clearly wrote this for the newbies in mind, the best part is the reference section at the end, which details the books, websites etc.. So you can make up your own mind on what path seems more attractive to you, also there is a really good chapter on magic and it's uses.
This really is a superb book, and it's a shame that a lot of authers don't write in this style. | Excellent introduction for the beginner | Customer Rating: | This little book provides an excellent and very readable introduction to Earth-centred religions for those who have very little prior knowledge. It doesn't go into much depth regarding any particular path, but that's not really its purpose - what it does provide is a good grounding in the 'vocabulary' and broad history of the 'major' pagan traditions named in the title, and a few of the less widely-practised paths as well. I particularly liked the author's approach to practical exercises - unlike some 'introductory' texts, which assume that the reader is already ready to embark on a pagan path and provide more of a 'how-to' approach, the exercises in this book are much simpler, more accessible and intended to get the reader comfortable with the idea of broadening his or her own spiritual horizons, e.g. visit a place of worship of a religion that you're not familiar with. A list of contacts for various pagan organisations is provided at the end of the book, which gives the reader plenty of scope for taking the 'next steps' in discovering his/her own path. Also, this book is written by a UK author and the contact list contains a lot of UK-based organisations, which is good for a UK readership.
In summary - if you're already some way along your own path and want some more in-depth information, this probably isn't the book for you. If you're just starting out, or simply looking for general information on paganism, then you can't go far wrong with this one. |
