a good solid album from Duran Duran

This took a few listen too's at first and I was nearly going to be one of those 'I love this group, so i will say its brilliant whatever I really think' However although it took a while to 'get it'! get it I finally did! and I really love this album, its very different to the other Duran stuff, but different in a great way. Look out for Skin Divers as a brilliant standout track! This should have been released as a single! Cant wait for the next direction. For all those jumping on the Timberlake/Timeberland bandwagon, please note this was one of the first and most successful tie ups, they seemed to have lost their magic when it came to Madonna!

Good but Disappointing

Fails to live up to the marketing hype

A number of the tracks sound like other artists who collaborated on the project

That said, it is a funky album and has great sound quality

It's too much!

Well, I set the CD to 'play' in the car on the way to work on Nov 13 last year. Instantly I found it difficult to locate the 'Duran' souns. The Valley sounds like a great but over produced track-see Timbaland for that! I feel that every 'song' is worthy of being part of a Duran album but in an different less 'black' arrangement. I don't want to hear Timbaland in my Duran songs however good he is at producing a making records sell. I want 'MY' duran. Astronaut was great, exceptional and will alwatys be the landmark, archetypal Duran comeback record. Andy, Roger, Johna dn Nick could all clearly be heard and their input was as glowing as one of the lights on a soho lap dancing bar-(don't ask!).
Nite runner sounds like a Timblaand albumtrack and when I heard it was being lined up for the second single I converted to catholicism just so I could go to confession! Fortunately sense prevailed and I hope it was the boys themselves that made the decision to pull Nite-runner. The obvious second single is Box Full O' honey. It would appeal to non Duran fans which is what an expanding band needs surely? Falling Down was a tear enducing, heart wrenching, classic that will be played around millions of Duran favoured bars for twenty years and its failure to chart makes me weep. The Le Bon daughter inspired 'She's too much' cancels out every wet sunday in a year with its emotional case for dad loves daughter.
I don't feel there will ever be a second single yet three tracks stand out as such. Commercial restraints and lack of confidence in its launch may be to blame but on my personal list of three tracks from every Duran Album will be 4, 5 and 10. For Gods sake boys-don't let the reception RCM received dampen the spirit-you have survived worse that this-god, look at the world-WE NEED YOU. rICK cONLON-rOCHDALE

I've got to admit, on first hearing this album I thought, OH GOD..it's the end! However, it does grow on you. Some strong song's which do need a bit of listening to, not quite up to the 'grabbability' of RIO and the other 80's albums. Didn't really like astronaut at first, but now I love it, sorry! Definately going to miss Andy, I know he was troublesome, but really did put some powerful influences into the band's sound at times.

Awesome deluxe package and a welcome return for the DD guys

I've been waiting for this album to come out for so long! For months us Duran Duran fans had nothing to go except the name of a track, Nite Runner, and confirmation that the guys were working with Justin and Timbaland. And then everything seemed to come at once, live previews of tracks, confirmed release dates and before you knew it, the album was here.

Special mention must first go to the awesome packaging this deluxe edition comes in. Taking the form of a bright red card slipcase/box it is clear that Duran Duran still put as much effort into the album presentation as the music contained on it - something i love about them and which harks back all the way to the brilliant Rio cover.

What comes in the box is a sticky press badge thing, the CD album and the DVD containing extras as well as two gorgeous glossy booklets of artwork that just typify the eternal extravagant feel of the band - it even smells amazing! This version is a must for all Duran Duran fans. The DVD is fascinating, containing footage from the recording sessions as well as behind the scenes of the video shoot and just general info as to the album's creation. But let's get onto the album itself...

Red Carpet Massacre sees Duran Duran once again slipping effortlessly into the contemporary sound of today. What fascinates me is that just like 2004's Astronaut, they sound at once nothing like and everything like they used to. Simon's vocals are still the same, John's bass is just as funky and pronounced and Nick's keyboards are just as innovative. This is the sound of a band that is musically incredibly accomplished and enjoy themselves immensely producing an album and playing the songs contained on it.

Guitars, although prominent on the album, rarely form the basis of the track, instead striking precisely, picking out intricate melodies, leaving the focus to fall on the slick synth/beat combos dreamed up by the band and Timbaland. It is testamant to his skill as a producer that his signature sound works just as well with Duran Duran as it does with pop darlings Timberlake and Furtado.

Every track on the album is memorable, home to catchy melodies and brilliant lyrics, two things that Duran Duran have always been masters at. Tracks like Tempted and Zoom In are infectious dance-pop whereas The Valley and She's Too Much are subtler in their approach, the latter taking the form of a dreamy ballad with a eerily pulsating synth bassline.

Tricked Out, although an instrumental is bizzarely one of the most fascinating tracks on the album, a central hook cycling through what is an intensely energetic track. Dirty Great Monster is equally innovative, touching on the dirtiness of a 90s era Depeche Mode while seeing the return of the infamous Rio saxaphone solos and providing a late album highlight.

Surely though, the two stellar points of the album are the track 3 & 4 combo of Nite Runner and Falling Down. The two tracks are the polar opposties of each other but represent some of the band's finest work. The former is a pure club floorfiller, insanely catchy and ice cold in it's effortless cool. Falling Down echoes the band's early 90s hit, Ordianry World, updating it for the 21st century with a beat-box element and a divine chorus and epic 1 minute guitar solo.

And so, how does the album shape up as a whole. It's a tough question and if i were to compare it another DD album it'd be Seven and the Ragged Tiger. Like that album, it is rich in production gloss and innovation and the songs take a while to grow, rewarding repeated listens. In that respect, i don't think Red Carpet Massacre matches up to the immediate likability of Astronaut which is a personal favourite of mine but resolutely shows that the band are still very much at the top of their game.
