A masterpiece of literature and translation
Customer Rating:  Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5 Score = 5
A superb translation of a fantastic book. The wee vignettes of Emanuel's illness and his time at the clinic are superbly depicted by Blecher and Howard's translation is fantastically sympathetic to both the text and the English language, a triumph all round!

little known classic of central european literature

Scarred Hearts has been previously translated in to French and German. I have been waiting for years for the English version. I am happy to I have not been disappointed. In fact, Scarred Hearts exceeded my hopes. Blecher has been compared to Kafka, which is apt, except that he is nothing like Kafka. His writing style, like Kafka's is simple and elegant. But the punch in Blecher comes from the absurdity and tragedy of this ordinary life. The fantastic and mythological are entirely absent. Well worth reading.
